tang yin quiet boats

For my last blog piece I chose Quiet Boats of an Autumn river painted by Tang Yin in the 1500.  I like the painting because it is very tranquil and makes me feel very peaceful when I look at it. It is a great capture of the mood and essence of mountains as two boats with pipers sit under a Japanese maple with a waterfall in the background.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa was created by the Japanese Artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1830 and 1833.  I selected it because it is a piece of art that I grew up around and saw it every time it was at my grandfather’s house.  I used to stare up at it and imagine what it was like being on those boats in the huge waves.

The painting depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near Kanagawa Japan.  Although the wave is assumed to be a tsunami the wav is more like an okinami which translates to a “wave of the open sea”.  It depicts the area around Mount Fuji under particular conditions.

Blog #6

For the theme for my blog six is art that I saw in the newspaper a few years back and that is 3-D sidewalk chalk drawings.  These artists blow my mind with their ability to transform a flat surface into a picture that looks like you will literally fall into yet remain solid ground.

Waterfall was created in River Street Moose Jaw Canada in July of 2007

Lava Burst was created in Geldern Germany August 2008

The Tree was created in Aarhus Denmark in 2008.

The second artist I have chosen is Julian Beever. He is an English born Belgium based artist that has been creating three dimensional street art since the mid-1990’s.  He is a truly gifted artist i feel.  with many great works of art.

Places Des Lices, St. Tropez was painted by Henri Matiss in 1904.  Matisse was a French artist who was born in 1869 and lived to 1954.  He is thought to be one of the most well-known artists of the twentieth century.  He grew up in Bohainen-Vermandois, France with his parents.  His work after WWI is similar to the neoclassicism of Picasso and Stravinsky, as well as the return to traditionalism of Derain.  He was diagnosed with cancer in 1941 he made it to the age of 84 and passed in 1954.

When looking at Matiss’s paintings this one stood out to me as soon as I saw it.  I enjoy looking at the smeared lines which give the painting a very interesting style that I like.  i like the use of color in the different areas of the picture  for example the light purple in the for ground and then the dark purple in the background.  The painting to me seems very peaceful with the house standing alone with no one around and the up kept garden surrounding the inner walls.

Water Lily Pond - Claude Oscar Monet - www.claudemonetgallery.org

Water Lily Pond was painted by Claude Monet with oil on canvas in 1899.  When I think of impressionism this is the most famous painting depicting it that comes to mind.  I have seen this painting in many places such as library, as well as Dr’s offices.  I find the painting to be quite beautiful with the dark green background the light blue and green bridge crossing in the middle ground, and then the water and water lilies in the foreground.  I find it to be very peaceful and pleasant to look at.

Claude Monet was born on November 14, to parents Claude Adolph Monet and Louise Justine Aubree Monet.  He entered the Le Harve secondary school of the arts on April s 1851.  He is known as the founder of French impressionists painting, and the most noted for his paintings of nature.

Blog Post #3 Classical

The Fountain of Love painted by Francois Boucher in 1748 is a prime example of Rococo art.  The painting is painted on canvas with oil and is 116 x 133 inches.

Boucher was born on September 29, 1703 and died May 30, 1770 at the age of sixty six.  Starting out as an engraver he soon accelerated and turned to painting.  I find this piece of work to be very beautiful, the way he has the water mill in the background but carries the water into the middle and foreground.  In the front along the bank are two women, two boys and two women paired up and looking at each other.  The two children are playing in between two goats and the couples are on either side of them.  This work really stands out to me and its one of my more new favorite paintings.

I feel that this is a good example of the rise of the middle class because it doesn’t show the rich or the poor but the middle class being able to enjoy themselves on the bank of a river not worried about work or anything else but just about having fun and enjoying life.

I choose Ecstasy of St. Teresa, which was sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1647 – 1652 in Santa Maria del la Vittoria, Rome.  The sculpture is carved of marble and stands 11’ 6” tall.  The sculpture is located above the alter of the Cornaro Chapel in Rome’s Santa Maria della Vittoria.  The sculpture represents an episode from the life of the saint as recorded in her spiritual autobiography.  In it she describes and angel carrying a fire tipped spear.  With it she pierces her heart repeatedly; an act that she stated sent her into a state of spiritual rapture.

In Bernini’s sculpture depicted is a cupid like angel holding an arrow.  He is standing over Teressa head tilted to the left looking down upon here.  She is laying down underneath him with her head thrown back and eyes closed.  She looks as if she is ready for the arrow no matter what the pain is she is about to endure.

I find the sculpture to be very beautiful and the craftsmanship on it is stunning.  For that to have been carved out of solid marble must have taken a very long time as well as a very skilled artist.  This makes me think back to the Council of Trent.  I feel it is related because the council was all about promoting the church and this depicts a woman accepting her faith even when faced with an angel with an arrow standing over her.

Analysis

When searching the internet for a painting from the Northern Renaissance I found a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, the painting is called Christ Carrying the Cross. It was painted in 1490 in Ghent.  This painting caught my eye because in it are many disfigured men standing around a man carrying a cross with a crown of thorns.  This painting is an example of reformation, the fact that he was able to paint a something like this and not be persecuted by the church shows how the times have changed.  I find the fact that the artist made sure to keep the focus of the painting that of Christ carrying the cross normal looking and pure interesting.  The fact that he feels he is pure he puts it into his painting by surrounding him by disfigured people who what I assume are the images of what society had become at that time.
