Places Des Lices, St. Tropez was painted by Henri Matiss in 1904.  Matisse was a French artist who was born in 1869 and lived to 1954.  He is thought to be one of the most well-known artists of the twentieth century.  He grew up in Bohainen-Vermandois, France with his parents.  His work after WWI is similar to the neoclassicism of Picasso and Stravinsky, as well as the return to traditionalism of Derain.  He was diagnosed with cancer in 1941 he made it to the age of 84 and passed in 1954.

When looking at Matiss’s paintings this one stood out to me as soon as I saw it.  I enjoy looking at the smeared lines which give the painting a very interesting style that I like.  i like the use of color in the different areas of the picture  for example the light purple in the for ground and then the dark purple in the background.  The painting to me seems very peaceful with the house standing alone with no one around and the up kept garden surrounding the inner walls.
